A
new city
Today, the City of Bromont occupies
the territory of the village of West Shefford and part of the
territory of the Adamsville village. In 1793, following the American
Revolution, John Savage, an American of Irish descent and a Loyalist,
was the first citizen to settle in the area that would later become
the village of West Shefford. West Shefford was incorporated in
1888. Georges Adams, merchant of the Seignory of Saint-Armand,
settled on the territory of Adamsville after acquiring a large
parcel of land a sawmill. Adamsville village was incorporated
in 1916.
The City of Bromont was founded in
1964, by entrepreneurs brothers, Rolland and Germain Désourdy
(mayor of Bromont from 1964 to 1977 ), based on two major avenues
of development, recreation/tourism and high-technology industry,
which were to co-exist with the residential sector, while protecting
the environment and the quality of life. Some would refer to it
as a city in the country. From then on, the City planning regulations,
with their rigorous standards, became the cornerstone of Bromont's
harmonious development.
Between 1964 and 1974, following
two mergers (West-Shefford and part of Adamsville) and 12 annexations,
the territory of the City of Bromont extended over 108,36 square
kilometres.
From 1964 on, Mont Brome was ready
to welcome its first skiers.
The recreation/tourism sector was
to develop into what is today a four-season tourist attraction,
that offers skiing, golfing (4), cycling, horseback riding, a
water park, an outdoor centre, etc.
The City of Bromont has distinguished
itself on the sports level repeatedly. The City hosted the equestrian
events of the 1976 Olympic Games, and since 1977, the Bromont
International - qualifying event for the World Cup equestrian
events. In 1986, Bromont hosted the World Cup Freestyle skiing;
in 1989 the World Cup Alpine ski finals, in 1990 the Eastern-Canada
Mountain Bike Championships, in 1992, the Canadian Mountain Bike
Championships, in 1994 , the World Camping and Caravaning Jamboree
and the the World Mountain Bike Championship, in 1993 and 1996
the Quebec Mountain Bike Championships and in 1997 the Mountain
Bike World Cup, and finally in 1998, the Finals of the Grundig/UCI
Mountain Bike Word Cup Championships.
The Bromont
Regional Airport (today managed by the Régie aéroportuaire
régionale des Cantons de l'Est, established by the cities
of Bromont, Cowansville
and Granby),
was inaugurated in 1968, and sits in the middle of what would
later become a high-technology industrial park, measuring a total
of 2,632 hectares.
In 1970, IBM Canada was the first
large industry to set up a plant in the Bromont industrial park,
soon followed by such companies as, Quali-T-Tube (1972), Dalsa
Semi Conducteur, GE Canada (1982), Hyundai (1986), Unifix (1986),
Imprimeries Québécor (1988), Thomas & Betts,
etc.
Bromont's first mayor was Mr Germain
Désourdy, who was followed by
- Mr Robert Leboeuf (1977-1978),
- Mr Pierre Jacob (1978-1982),
- Mr Pierre Bellefleur (1982-1996),
- Mr Robert Désourdy (1996-1998),
